Julie and Julia - Who is Julie?

With the movie Julie and Julia coming out soon and my interest peaked. I decided to find out more about the Julie behind Julie and Julia. Everyone knows who Julia Child is, but what about Julie Powell?

What did I find? I found Julie’s new and old blog. I started with her new one. Why? Well that one came up first and I hit that link first. What did I think? Well she’s frank, holds nothing back and seems great.  Is she a diva? Her blog certainly doesn’t give me that impression. Then I read a bit of her old blog and liked her (well her blogging personality that is) a lot more. Do I want to be her next BFF? No, but it made me want to pick up her book during my next bookstore jaunt, this weekend.

Now the bigger question did it inspire me to cook? To be honest not really. I don’t eat meat and I’m already busy with 2 full time jobs and writing when I have 2 seconds to rub together. However I got the feeling that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to. Why? Well she did and look what happened to her.

Will I be buying a ticket to see the movie? I think I will.

Review - The Ugly Truth - SPOILER ALLERT

The Ugly Truth is rude, crude, crass and fabulous. Grab your girlfriend and make a girls night out with this movie. Men, to be blunt stay home for this one.

Now the language in the movie is direct and doesn’t fool around (I’d say something else but I won’t). However it’s appropriate for the movie. Gerard Butler is fabulous in his role and I sort of like Katherine Heigl. The best part (SPOILER ALLERT) is that he is the first and only one to say the ‘L’ word. Usually in these types of movies the woman says it first and always says. Not this time.

The reaction of the crowd in the theatre was fabulous. At first there were a lot of gasps quickly followed by nervous giggles. Then it turned to outright laughter.

The Ugly Truth is a fresh change.

If you need a little inspiration in  your own life. Take a look at this

I can’t wait until the Olympic’s are here.

I’m featured

I am pleased to say that I am featured on the internal website of the company I work for, SAIC. I would post the link to where you could also see the feature, but I can’t. The only people who can see and access it are employees of SAIC.

I am so thrilled that for the next two day I along with my book, Deadly Secrets will be featured on the company internal website. We have over 44,000 employees. So to be chosen is quite an honor.

Here is what they have to say in the feature

“(Insert my legal name) who supports the Canadian telecommunications industry by day, has published her first book, Deadly Secrets. Half the royalties go toward breast cancer research”

They even have a picture of me, a bad one I might ad, but its there none the less.

I sold book 2 in the Deadly Series

I don’t think I blogged about this, but last month Carole from Lachesis Publishing accepted the proposal for my second book in the Deadly series. I’m thrilled and panicked at the same time. I keep shifting from Right On book 2 will be coming out and Oh My Goodness how will I be able to get enough time to write a kick butt book 2.

I’m also torn between two titles for the book, Deadly Dates (which sounds like a comedy but its not at all) and Deadly Sins.  I have a deadline of Mar 31 2010 to hand it in, which is a good thing since I’m only on page 4 typed and page 10 written by hand. I have gone back to writing the first draft by hand and then typing the rest. I’m hoping to get inspired at different locations. So far it hasn’t worked as well as I’d hoped.

The new book will be darker and the killer will have a POV (point of view) or a voice of his own. I’m different from other suspense writers. I don’t know who the killer is until the end, well with this book I do know who the main killer is. I believe this might be one of the reasons I’m having a hard time getting the words down on paper or it could be that I’m just not dedicating enough time to writing.

I figure there are 252 days left before my book is due to be handed in. If I wrote 7 pages a week I should be good to go.

My wonderful time at the RWA Nationals in DC

I tried a few times to blog from RWA Nationals this year but due to the lack of internet service to our room. Yep we bought and paid for but never got it consistent enough to do more than check some emails.

I had a blast in DC. I always enjoy RWA Nationals. I’ve been attending since 2002. What did I learn this time around? To make time for myself and that saying “no” isn’t a bad thing. Robin Perini’s workshop on time management was fabulous. I strongly suggest any writer and busy Mom to take it. You won’t regret it.

I also took part in the Moonlight Bazaar. My fabulous publisher Lachesis Publishing had a table once more this year. I along with A B Wallace, JoMarie DeGioia and Maureen Fisher took turns selling and signing our books. We had a great time.

I met a few old friends once more but missed those who couldn’t make it (yep that’s you, Morag, Tracy Goodwin and Judy Ridgley). I’m hoping to see you next year in Nashville.

Ok back to deleting the thousand of blog posting by porn and drug pushers. I swear they are getting more and more annoying every day.

Remembering an icon - Michael Jackson

So many things have been said about Michael Jackson on the news and on the net that I’ve debated on blogging about his death. The news have centered on his eccentric life and decision. What I’ve hated the most though is how the media is exploiting his children. The man sheltered those beautiful children for a reason, but it seems as though now that he’s gone the media believes they are fair game.

So I decided to not blog about his death or his life. I’ll leave that to others, what I’d like to blog about and remember is the writer and creative person Michael Jackson was. He wrote some of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. Man behind the Mirror had me taking a hard look at my life, all parts of my life even the ones I didn’t like to admit I had. The man had a gift with words and a way to reach out and make his fans feel exactly what he did when he wrote the song. I hate to say this but the songs that are being played on the radio nowadays don’t make me feel anything or anything positive.

What will Michael Jackson be remembered for? His dance moves? His eccentric choices? His surgeries? His music?  I can’t answer for anyone but myself. I know his eccentric choices will come to mind to most people, but for me I’ll remember the man who could write amazing songs and touch millions of people at the same time.

RWA Nationals - Washington

This year RWA National conference is taking place in Washington DC. I can’t wait to go although a lot of my friend will not be going this time. It seems the economy is too bad for most of them to travel.

I’ll be leaving in 3 days (count down!) to go to RWA Nationals. However first I’ll be stopping in Massachusetts to do a few signings first. Then I’ll be driving down with a friend of mine.

Stay tuned. I’ll blog about my trip and Nationals as much as I can.

Movie Review - MY SISTER’S KEEPER

This past weekend I went to see My Sister’s Keeper. I brought my Mom with me. I had read the book while she hadn’t. I can see why some of Ms Picoult’s fans are upset over the ending of the movie. Most of the movie stayed true to the book, with the exception of the ending. Personally I prefer the book’s ending to that of the movie.

Also I found that Brian and Jesse’s characters were under developed in the movie. Jason Patrick played the role of Brian, the father. He seemed to be arm candy for most of the movie, while in the book his plays a heavier role. As for Jesse his character is more interesting and believable in the book.

I have to say I had reservations about Cameron Diaz play the role of the mother. I’m so used to seeing her play comedic roles that this is quite a departure for her. All in all she pulled it off.

Now do I recommend the movie? Yep, but I still recommend the book more.
