Dirty Dancing - Why is it so hard to forget

With the passing of Patrick Swayze a lot of fans are talking about their favourite movie. I have to say my favourite is the North and South TV movie. However DIRTY DANCING comes in at a close second. Since this is the favourite of many I thought it would be interesting to blog about why this movie appeals to so many.

Here are my reasons

  • We see Patrick’s well built naked torso. I bet her went to gym on a regular basis because he was gorgeously fit.

  • For a change the heroine, Baby is a strong young woman who has a mind of her own. Yes she is sheltered and innocent, but she’s the one who saves the hero. However he doesn’t sit by and let her lead him. No way, he helps her see beyond her pampered existence. Together grow and become better people.

  • The dancing is freeing and fabulous. The dancers make it look so easy I don’t know how they do that.

  • The music is fantastic and makes you want to get up and dance along with them

  • The message of the movie might be simple but it’s well delivered.

This movie will always be a favourite of mine.

What I’m looking forward to seeing in September at the movies

There are a few movies I’m looking forward to seeing but none more than FAME. I loved the original movie and the show. The best part is that Debbie Allen is also returning for the new movie. I simple can’t wait.

Here is the trailer for the movie.

Julie and Julia - Who is Julie?

With the movie Julie and Julia coming out soon and my interest peaked. I decided to find out more about the Julie behind Julie and Julia. Everyone knows who Julia Child is, but what about Julie Powell?

What did I find? I found Julie’s new and old blog. I started with her new one. Why? Well that one came up first and I hit that link first. What did I think? Well she’s frank, holds nothing back and seems great.  Is she a diva? Her blog certainly doesn’t give me that impression. Then I read a bit of her old blog and liked her (well her blogging personality that is) a lot more. Do I want to be her next BFF? No, but it made me want to pick up her book during my next bookstore jaunt, this weekend.

Now the bigger question did it inspire me to cook? To be honest not really. I don’t eat meat and I’m already busy with 2 full time jobs and writing when I have 2 seconds to rub together. However I got the feeling that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to. Why? Well she did and look what happened to her.

Will I be buying a ticket to see the movie? I think I will.

Review - The Ugly Truth - SPOILER ALLERT

The Ugly Truth is rude, crude, crass and fabulous. Grab your girlfriend and make a girls night out with this movie. Men, to be blunt stay home for this one.

Now the language in the movie is direct and doesn’t fool around (I’d say something else but I won’t). However it’s appropriate for the movie. Gerard Butler is fabulous in his role and I sort of like Katherine Heigl. The best part (SPOILER ALLERT) is that he is the first and only one to say the ‘L’ word. Usually in these types of movies the woman says it first and always says. Not this time.

The reaction of the crowd in the theatre was fabulous. At first there were a lot of gasps quickly followed by nervous giggles. Then it turned to outright laughter.

The Ugly Truth is a fresh change.

Movie Review - MY SISTER’S KEEPER

This past weekend I went to see My Sister’s Keeper. I brought my Mom with me. I had read the book while she hadn’t. I can see why some of Ms Picoult’s fans are upset over the ending of the movie. Most of the movie stayed true to the book, with the exception of the ending. Personally I prefer the book’s ending to that of the movie.

Also I found that Brian and Jesse’s characters were under developed in the movie. Jason Patrick played the role of Brian, the father. He seemed to be arm candy for most of the movie, while in the book his plays a heavier role. As for Jesse his character is more interesting and believable in the book.

I have to say I had reservations about Cameron Diaz play the role of the mother. I’m so used to seeing her play comedic roles that this is quite a departure for her. All in all she pulled it off.

Now do I recommend the movie? Yep, but I still recommend the book more.

Review - PASCHENDAELE - the movie

productimage.jpg

I spent the afternoon alone at the local cinema. What did I go and see? PASCHENDAELE. Since I’d read the book I knew what would happen. It still impacted me as much as the book did. I’m glad I read the book first. The book gave Mr. Gross the opportunity to go deeper on an emotional and detail level with all the characters. There is only so much you can put in a movie.

What did surprise me was how graphic the movie remained true to the book. The battle scene, were amazing yet quite gruesome, specially the opening one where Michael Dunne stabs a young German soldier in the face. This is a war movie so I had expected some hard to watch scenes but the attention to details that were put into PASCHENDAELE are what set this movie apart.

I recommend it hole heartedly.

Movie Review - Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2

My girlfriend and I took her daughters to see SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2. We’d done the same when the first movie came, it just seemed fitting to do it once more.

I realized two things, I’ve out grown teenage movies (thank goodness) and two you are never too old to enjoy a love story even when it’s made for teenagers. Did I feel old being in my mid-thirties in the theatre? Although the average age would have been in the teens there were quite a few of us who weren’t.

This is a good movie for teenage girls and their Moms. It will remind the older generation about their youth. It certainly did that for me. However I have to say it was good to see a movie that didn’t have guns going off, sirens and car chases. It was a good old fashion romance.

Do I hope they make a 3rd version? Well if I answer that I’d be spoiling the ending of the movie, now I couldn’t do that.  You’ll simply have to go out and see it for yourself and make your own assumptions.
